The name of Koh Pha-Ngan comes from the word 'Ngan', the southern dialect meaning 'sand bar', for there are many sand bars offshore around the island.
Located in the gulf of Thailand, 80kms off the coast of Surat Thani and about 540kms south of Bangkok, Koh Phangan is Thailand 's fifth largest, but most unspoilt island, with at least 90% of it's 167 square km consisting of tropical forest.
Located to the north of Koh Samui, the island has large granite peaks, waterfalls, beautiful beaches, swaying tropical palms and wonderful wildlife, providing spectacular trekking, climbing, mountain biking, diving and snorkelling. The relative lack of accessibility has kept Phangan basking in the sunshine, away from the rest of the world and especially mainstream tourism, ensuring that it is indeed a “paradise on earth”.
The island is famous for it's beauty, royal patronage, Full Moon parties at Had Rin Nok beach and, most importantly, it's designation as a zone for eco-tourism.
Koh Phangan's weather is almost always beautiful. Blue-sky days and a balmy ocean breeze are the norm. For the purists, late December to the end of March is the ideal tropical island weather experience. Some like it hot, if so, April to June is the time to really bake. July to October is idyllic, with the wet season starting mid-October to early December.
